Prof. Dr. Ummu Salma Bava is Professor of European Studies and hold the Jean Monnet Chair in European Union, Security and Peace and Conflict Resolution at the Centre for European Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. She was Chairperson of the Centre from November 2017 to November 2019.
She has studied in India and Europe and with over three decades of teaching, research and administrative experience, she is one of the leading Indian experts on the European Union, contemporary Germany and Indian foreign and security policy. Her other focus areas are regional integration and organization, emerging powers, international politics, global governance, norms, crisis management, conflict resolution and peace building and higher education.
She has numerous publication and the latest include EU-India Relations - The Strategic Partnership in Light of the European Union’s Global Strategy (Springer 2021), Regionalism and Multilateralism: Politics, Economics, Culture. (Routledge, 2020);“The European Union and the Changing Security Dynamics in Europe” (Springer 2019), “India and the Global Order: Negotiating between the Old and New Order”, International Studies (Sage 2018). She has international projects and was awarded the prestigious UGC- DAAD IGP Research project 2016-2020. She is one of the partners of FU Berlin, Germany for the Project on “Contestations of the Liberal Scripts” under the Cluster of Excellence.
She is an International Member,Academic Advisory Board, German Institute of Global and Area Studies, Hamburg, Germany ( November 2014-). She also was an International Member of the Research Advisory Council of Germany’s leading Think Tank Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP), Berlin, Germany (June 2013- December 2019). She has been conferred with different Fellowships and awards. She is fluent in English, Hindi and German. She has been recognized by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2005) and the US Department of State (2007).
